Family Eye Care

Sight is precious – it allows us to work, engage in hobbies and see all the beauty around us. As with any health issues, it's important to take care of your eyesight with regular preventive care and good vision habits. Here's what you need to know about eye care for the whole family, courtesy of Naples Eye Physicians, in Naples, Florida.

What's Basic Eye Care?

Like the rest of your body, your eyes need proper medical care. You should have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, depending on such factors as your age and other health issues. Children should have annual eye exams, as their vision may change relatively quickly. If you need glasses or contacts, you may need a new prescription. People who have diabetes should have a check for retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that can cause vision loss. Older patients need a special test for glaucoma.

The Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam is like a full-body physical. It includes a history and analysis of your visual needs, and various tests. These include tests of visual acuity, eye coordination and color perception, as well as a neurological examination. A dilated eye exam allows for a very detailed examination of the interior of the eye. Pressure testing can confirm the presence or absence of glaucoma. Other tests, such as eye hand coordination and eye movements, may be necessary for some patients.

Eye Care and Pediatrics

Pediatrics is the medical specialty of caring for children. When it comes to vision care, the goal in treating children is to asses growth and development and to identify problems early. Children who have visual difficulties such as near-sightedness can have difficulty learning because they can't see well. They may also develop conditions like “lazy eye,” in which the eye muscles don't work properly. Corrective lenses can make a big difference in a child's ability to read and learn.

Protecting Your Vision

While professional eye care is important, it's only part of the picture. Your overall health affects your vision, so it's important to eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep and exercise. Always wear eye protection when you engage in work or hobbies that have a risk of eye injury. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the effects of ultraviolet light. Don't smoke, it's bad for your entire body, not just your eyes.
