No Line Lenses

About No Line Lenses

No line lenses, also known as progressive lenses or no line multifocal, are a relatively new way your ophthalmologist can help you see the world if you require bifocals or trifocals. You’ll get the same end result -- better vision whether you’re looking at something distant, near at hand or in-between -- but with several advantages.

One key benefit, and probably the most immediately noticeable, is the absence of that well-known segmentation that divides your eyeglass lenses into sections when you wear traditional lenses.

Bifocals and Trifocals

Bifocals have been around ever since the American genius Ben Franklin invented them. What this “split screen” lens concept does is allow the typically over-40 user with a vision condition known as presbyopia to use the upper section of the lens for improved distance vision and the bottom segment for clearer near distance viewing, such as for reading. In other words, it treats farsightedness and nearsightedness with a single pair of eyeglasses.

Trifocal lenses take that concept a step farther with the creation of a third “power zone.”  This third portion of the lens is for improved vision when focusing on objects at an intermediate distance. You’ll get a clearer vision field at a distance of about 18 to 24 inches from your face -- or at about arms’ length.

Advantages of No Line Lenses

Progressive or no line lenses are quite an advancement in ophthalmology. Since deficiencies in near, far and intermediate distance viewing are all addressed in one lens, there are no distracting lines. Your new lenses will look identical to single vision lenses -- a single, unsegmented piece of glass.

The transition from one zone of vision to another is smoother than with bifocals or trifocals. There’s no jarring visual roving from one segment of glass to another. No line lenses provide more of a “blended” viewing experience, with a more gradual gradation.

Also, many happy progressive lens fans feel that the lack of the tell-tale segmentation of bifocal or trifocal lenses make the wearer look and feel younger.

Those who have balked at the idea of wearing bifocals and have separate pairs of glasses for nearsightedness and farsightedness can also enjoy the benefits of no lines lenses. They can now content with-- and avoid losing -- only a single pair of eyeglasses.
