Overview of Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a disorder that can develop over time and it is a refractive error that affects the eyes, similar to being nearsighted or farsighted. An astigmatic eye has no single focus point for light on the retina to create a clear vision. Instead, focus points cause distorted or blurred vision.

In a normal eye, the cornea is perfectly round.  In an astigmatic eye, it is asymmetrical and often shaped like an oval instead of a perfect round ball.

Astigmatism is either regular or irregular, based on the position of an eye’s principal meridians.  Most individuals have regular astigmatism.  Possible causes of irregular astigmatism are corneal scarring from an eye injury and keratoconus, an eye disease.

Patients typically experience eye strain; headaches, particularly after prolonged use of the eyes; or squinting.

Astigmatism Treatment from Our Ophthalmologists

A test known as retinoscopy helps diagnose astigmatism during a regular exam.  Our ophthalmologists offer three types of treatment:

Eyeglasses include a prescription for sphere power, cylinder power, and axis designation.

Gas permeable, extended wear, toric soft, and bifocal contact lenses also correct vision.  For some patients, rigid contacts reshape an astigmatic cornea.

Refractive surgery such as LASIK corrects most cases by revising the cornea’s shape.
