Surgical Procedures Are A Core Medical Service For An Ophthalmologist

Ultimately, an ophthalmologist’s role goes far beyond eye examinations and contact lens fittings. One of the primary roles we serve as ophthalmologists is performing medical surgeries. We are licensed doctors with the necessary training and experience to perform delicate surgeries using a variety of advanced tools and diagnostics.

Among the type of surgeries offer by an ophthalmologist include the following:

  • Cataract surgery which involves removing the defective cloudy natural lens in your eye and replacing it with an artificial lens implant, also known as an intraocular lens. This artificial lens will help you to see your best.
  • Eyelid surgeries including ptosis repair and upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty are performed to repair eyelid control and to improve your ability to see clearly.
  • LASIK is an advanced outpatient form of laser surgery that helps correct a variety of refractive errors, including near and farsightedness as well astigmatism. This surgical laser is used to reshape your cornea in the front of your eye, which helps improve the way your eye focuses light rays into the retina at the back of your eye.
  • Laser trabeculoplasty uses a focused beam of light to alter the drainage angle of your eye. This surgery helps fluid flow out of the front of portion of the eye, and helps decrease pressure in your eye. It’s especially helpful for treating glaucoma that hasn’t responded to medication.

These are just a few of the types of surgery that ophthalmologists specialize in, and that we offer at Naples Eye Physicians.

We at Naples Eye Physicians also believe it’s important as ophthalmologists to stay on top of the latest treatments and research. This can help ensure the safety of our patients and potentially introduce new treatments in the future to our eyecare services.

Ophthalmology FAQs

When you have a concern about your eyesight, you go to the eye doctor. The question is, what type? While they perform many similar services, ophthalmologists and optometrists can have very different practices. Depending on your vision needs, you'll be better off choosing one type of eye doctor or the other. Here at Naples Eye Physicians many of our patients have questions. Here are some of the more common ones we hear.

What is the Difference Between an Ophthalmologist and an Optometrist?

Opthamologist training includes college, medical school, internship, and residency, just like any other medical specialty. Ophthalmologists provide an entire package of medical eye care, including surgery, medical and optical services.

Optometrists are different in that they go through 4 years of Optometry College but don't attend medical school. They can diagnose eye conditions and prescribe some drugs but aren't licensed to perform eye surgery. They can, however, provide pre- and post-op care.

Should I See an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist?

If you're simply having your eyes checked to get a new prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, go to an optometrist's office. But if you have an existing eye condition or over the age of 40, see an ophthalmologist for:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular degeneration

An optometrist can diagnose these diseases, but once the disease progresses its key that you see an ophthalmologist.

As a medical doctor, the ophthalmologist is also concerned with the physical health of your eyes. If you have an eye disease and it's progressed to the point where it's affecting your lifestyle, the doctor can often perform eye surgery to improve your eyesight. The ophthalmologist can also prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses as well as caring for your eyesight after the surgical procedure.

When Should Eyes Be Examined?

Your child's first eye examination should be at about six months of age. Bring her in again in about three years, and again right before she starts school. After that, schoolchildren without eye problems should have their eyes examined every year, preferably before the school year begins.

As an adult, you should have your eyes examined every 3-5 years if you have no vision problems until you reach the age of 39. Adults aged 40-65 should get their eyes checked every 2-4 years and every year or two after retirement age.
