Premium Lens Implants

Your Naples Eye Doctors Offer Premium Lens Implants Following Cataract Surgery

Cataract removal involves removal of the eye's lens, a transparent component of the eye necessary for focusing refracted light on the retina. Our Naples eye doctor uses FDA-approved intraocular lenses made of acrylic or silicone to replace lenses damaged by cataracts. These premium lens implants also contain materials to protect your eyes from UV ray damage.

Monofocal Intraocular Lens Implants

Monofocal IOLs are the most common type of implants used to replace eye lenses following cataract surgery. Prior to being placed in the eye, your doctor will discuss whether you would benefit from distant focus, mid-distance focus or near focus monofocal IOLs. Only one kind of focus standard can be selected but each intraocular lens contains a vision prescription best addressing your particular refractive errors.

All IOLs behave like actual eye lenses by focusing incoming light through the pupil and cornea. Upon reaching the retina, this light is converted to bioelectrical signals that are picked up by the optic nerve and transmitted to the brain. Three times smaller than a dime, IOLs are invisible once implanted and last indefinitely.

What are Aspheric Intraocular Lenses?

Most IOLs are spherically shaped so its front surface curves evenly from the center to the periphery of the lens. Although traditional IOLs fit the shape of the eye fairly well, aspheric IOLs are made to more closely match the condition and shape of the eye's lens. Your Naples eye doctors may recommend aspheric IOLs if you have trouble seeing at night since these lenses help reduce visual distortions sometimes caused by traditional IOLs.

Benefits of Toric Intraocular Lenses

Toric IOLs correct common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism because these premium lens implants have various powers installed at different points of the lens. Toric IOLs also allow your eye doctor to make adjustments to the IOL's orientation in the eye to achieve better astigmatism correction.

Other procedures may be used after removing cataracts that correct astigmatism, such as PRK, LASIK or astigmatic keratotomy. However, implanting toric lenses reduces the risk of patients needing one of these procedures in the future.

Choosing a Premium Lens Implant

Before choosing an IOL, your Naples eye doctors may ask what kind of activities you enjoy that you would like to engage in without wearing glasses or how well you would like to see without needing glasses when reading, doing computer work or watching television.
