Refractive Cataract Surgery

With age comes a greater risk of developing cataracts that can obstruct your vision. Cataracts cloud the lens of your eye, making it difficult for you to see clearly. You may experience blurred or hazy vision or see with a yellowish tint. Cataracts can be treated and vision restored through cataract surgery. If you live in Naples, FL, or the surrounding communities, come to Naples Eye Physicians for cataracts treatment.

What You Should Know about Cataracts

Cataracts often start small and develop slowly over a period of years. You’ll probably be able to use prescription eyeglasses or stronger lighting to counter their effects early on. As cataracts grow, however, your vision will become more obscured. Objects will appear more blurred and you may develop sensitivity to light. Colors will begin to fade and you’ll see things more in a yellowish tint.

Over time, loss of vision will make it difficult to perform daily tasks or partake in activities you enjoy like reading, watching TV, or playing games with your friends. Once cataracts begin to disrupt your lifestyle, it’s time to have them removed with cataract surgery. Our Naples ophthalmologist will carefully monitor your vision and recommend the best time for this procedure.

What to Expect from Cataract Surgery

Before scheduling cataract surgery, our ophthalmology specialist will evaluate your overall health, eye health, and vision and explain what to expect from this treatment. We’ll also provide complete instructions on how to prepare for the day of surgery.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure performed by our ophthalmologist at our clinic. You will be awake during your procedure, but your eye doctor will numb your eye so you feel no pain and give you calming medication to help you relax during the surgery.

Cataract surgery entails removing the clouded lens from your eye and replacing it with a clear, artificial lens to restore your sight. The entire procedure may last between 20 to 30 minutes, after which you’ll remain in our clinic for another half hour to ensure there are no surgical complications. You’ll then be allowed to return home. You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home after the procedure.

We’ll prescribe eye drops for use after the surgery to protect you against infections and promote healing. If you have cataracts in both eyes, we'll wait until the first eye has healed before performing surgery on the other. It may take up to 3 months to fully heal, but you may notice improved vision in as little as a week after treatment.
